is it possible for a non-native american to recieve a native american name? if so how?
Native american names... this might be a stupid question?
most tribes don't adopt anyone. a native family might adopt someone but that does not make you a native. so why do you want a native name if you are not native anyway? never understood that.
Reply:Well, I suppose there's nothing stopping parents from giving their kid whatever name they want, or stopping people from adopting whatever name they want later in life. I've run across plenty of people who use names from cultures they aren't remotely related to because they thought the name was pretty/unique/unusual/special and they didn't want their kid to be one of 8 MacKenzies or 11 Aidens in kindergarten. I'm not sure how Native Americans usually feel about non-Native Americans using traditional Native American names, though I imagine feelings about the situation would be complicated and colored by things like past relations between Native Americans and...well, everyone else living here (seeing as we took their lands and tried to suppress their cultures and all). I'm sure not all of them would be against it, but I do think this would be much more sensitive than, say, a family without a hint of Celtic ancestry giving all of their kids Celtic (or more likely "Celtic") names.
Reply:You could be "adopted" into a tribe.
You might marry a native american or even be taught by one.... as I was when I first began to study shamanism.
Or your folks might choose a native american name to name you. or you could go to the courthouse and pay $400 and change your name.
