I need to find out one of my native american names?

im two types of native american, cherokee and eskimo (alaskan)

i am doing this (researching my family) in honor of my full blooded great grandma who was 107 when she passed last year. please help me

my name is: Alec

I need to find out one of my native american names?
I'm guessing you're assuming there are name translations like Juan in Spanish is John in English or Jose and Joe or Guillermo and William.

To the best of my knowledge no Native American language translates names. If you weren't given a Native name you don't have one - you are only known as Alec.

Some people do carry two names, a caucasian (for lack of better word) one and a native one. I was given an English name, the name on my birth cert that everyone knows me by. My father also gave me a Native name. This one is only known to my family and close friends.
Reply:There are alot of areas to look. I would start with Indians.org site. They have a great Tribal Directory. Start with your Alaskan ancestors and go from there. There is also a Cherokee site you may be interested in. It is listed below.

Could you speak to your Grandmother's friends and other people in your family? What about getting a Birth Certificate of your Grandmother?

Best of luck.
Reply:Do you mean family names? Should have asked grandma before she died.

Talk to your family, see what records and things there are to pick though. Look at sites like familysearch.org. If you know some names you may be able to find others. Knowing what tribes (i.e. which one within the Cherokee) would help.

Your name being Alec won't tell you anything.
Reply:I don't exactly understand the question, but I am cherokee as well. I do know that "Alec" is not an original Indian name. Repost this with a more detailed question of what you are looking for, I don't really understand it.
