ok.. I mean how can Washington keep "Redskins" and FSU Keep "seminoles" as their nicknames.. cause all of the high school football teams can not have a team named that based on or related to "Native American". It's kinda like PC double standards don't you think...
How can college and NFL team get away for having Native American related name?
I couldn't agree less. Sports teams, both professional %26amp; amatures, adpoted Native American nic's because of their ferociouness %26amp; toughness.
It's actually a tribute to the spirit of the Native Americans.
Those who don't see this are either uneducated or are looking for a reason to complain.
Long live Chief Wahoo!
Reply:Your statement about high school teams is incorrect. Where I live the team name is the Warriors and the emblem is an Indian Chief...sorry, Native American Chief.
In fact in our division there are 2 other schools with the name warriors, 6 Indians, 1 Red Raiders, 1 Raiders, and 1 Little Indians.
Reply:These names are in honor of the native americans. ZQNUPE...your argument would be valid if they were called the "Redskin drunks".
Reply:My school's teams names are the Redskins. At the beginning of our football game we have people dressed like Indians with face paint feathers and all run out of a tepee holding flags. I live in Oklahoma and all the Indians think it's funny.
Reply:perhaps they are proud to diplay native american heratage! maybee they don't want the rest of the country to forget about our past and that the natives were here first and should never be forgotten and known for something more than casenos! think about it!
Reply:the seminole indian tribe endorsed the name. and redskins (washington) and indians (cleveland) are so broad that they are accepted. should brown people protest the browns???
Reply:the reason the get away with it is native people think white people trying to act like the native people of the past is funny and it is i am native.
Reply:But Imspencr....if the Name "Redskins" has nothing to do with Native Americans....what's with the guy on the helmet....why not a "patriot" as you have suggested. Redskin IS a not so nice word or Native Americans. If it doesn't apply then remove the picture from the side of the helmet.
Reply:highschool teams have Native American related names, theres 2 in my county
Reply:One of the highschool we played against was also the Braves. It is usually not the Native American tribes that complain, but other people that are offended for them. The whole thing is ridiculous... should the state of Texas get mad at the Texans or should Canada get mad at the Montreal Canadiens. Universities have to be ultra-PC nowadays, so that is why they usually can't keep any name that has to do with anything.
Soon, UC Irvine will be hearing about offended Anteaters.
Reply:These teams have the endorsements to keep their names. I get so tired of these PC numskulls. I play on an industrial league basketball team and we are "The Fighting Whities". Everyone thinks it's hilarious. Screw the PC police.
Reply:I think it's an honor to have a team and a mascot named after my heritage, I believe it shows respect.
Reply:My high school's mascot was "The Brave" which was an Idian warrior. The district is named after an Indian Chief who originally settled our area. We have indian heads all over everything, we do the tomahawk chop, etc. It is still the same and I've never heard anything about them changing it.
Reply:Go Illini. My high school's nickname is the Indians.
Reply:generally i agree that NA should not be disgraced in such manners. Keep in mind however that the Redskins name has little to do with Native Americans. Rather, their name came from the Boston Tea Party, when Colonists very thinly disgused themselves as Native Americans before dumping all the cargo in Boston Harbor. That was the origin of the football team name, and so they will not give up the name, as it has to do with Patriotism, not Native Americans.
Reply:There's always been a big uproar about the Washington Redskins. I remember going to an Earth Day rally in DC once (that's Washington, DC to all you non-locals), and a woman began her speak by introducing herself as a Native American and shouting "I am NOT a Washington Redskin!" A few people in the crowd cheered, most boo-ed. I can see where people would find it offensive, but then you drive throught the Southwest and see signs everywhere posted by Native Americans calling themselves Indians, which is also considered politically incorrect. You'll never please everyone.
Reply:ROFLMAO...he whom has the money, makes the rules. in other words, rules are for everyone but the very, very wealthy.
Hypocracy at its best!
great question...now prepare for the thumbs down, hate messages, etc, etc.
