This was back in 1940's during the Japanese/American War?
What was the name of the Native American that helped hold up the American flag on Iwo Jima Island?
His name was Ira Hayes (no relation). He was a Pima Indian from Arizona. His life story was quite tragic. Johnny Cash wrote a sad song about him.
Best wishes and God bless.

Reply:Ira Hayes. bobhayes (below) is right that Johnny Cash sang "The Ballad of Ira Hayes", but he didn't write it. Peter La Farge did.
Reply:He was from Antigo, WI. I met him once but I am amazed that people actually know his name. I couldn't remember it. Good job folks.
